Allen & Myra Charleston
We are a century farm with over 100 years continuous agricultural production under one family. After learning first hand about the benefits of emu oil use when Myra twisted her knee, we began looking into this alternative livestock. Pleased to learn that every part of the bird could be used, we felt that it would be a viable enterprise and our farm operations were diversified in 1994 to include emus. We started out with 7 unrelated pairs as breeding stock. Stock inventory varies during the year as birds are 'moved out', but we currently maintain 12 breeding pairs.
This is a small, hands on "farm to finish" family run operation. Our birds are raised in spacious pens on a nutritionally balanced emu ration to help them reach their genetic potential. We feed free choice and also allow them to browse. We do not use growth hormones, antibiotics or insecticides on our birds. Our products: We sell the USDA inspected, heart healthy red meat as well as all the co-products from this totally usable bird. The emu oil used in our products is all natural, odorless and creamy. It has been certified by the American Oil Chemists Society as "Fully Refined" as outlined by the American Emu Association Trade Rules. Our emu leather and leggings come in an assortment of colors and grades. We sell emu feathers by the pound as well as in smaller packages for the craftsperson or fisherman.
Our infertile emu eggs are blown out and cleaned for sale to egg artists and the hatched eggshells are sold by the pound to mixed media artists. We also have carved emu eggs. We do custom hatching by contract. We offer farm tours during non-breeding season to schools and special groups.
